| Summary: Tenchi Misaki lives a quiet life in the country, where his grandfather tends an old Shinto shrine. Having been told stories about the demon inside the shrine since he was young, Tenchi one day decides to investigate what's really inside it. In doing so he unwittingly releases an 800 year old demon, Ryoko, and sets off a chain reaction that beings a cast of eccentric, but still hot, chicks from outer space to take over his home, and also brings down the wrath of evil warlords and demented geniuses upon himself. |

Spirit of Discord:
Tenchi Muyo was one of the shows that got me into anime, and remained
my favorite until Nadesico dethroned it.
The show isn't entirely unique, but it's different enough to make
itself known. The misfits and oddballs that make up the cast are
more original than the average show, and more dynamic characters
to boot.
The show's main draw is definitely the characters and the
Interactions between them. Slayers
fans will be right at home
with this one. While there is a good deal of fan service, it's not
so bad that it gets into the way of the show. Back on topic, the
constant bickering between Ayeka and Ryoko can get old
after a while, but the show often pushes them off to the side
to concentrate on what's going on with seemingly less important
characters. In the end there's enough charm and likablity to go
around, and you (or at least I), end up caring for the entire
cast. It may seem dorky to get so attached to the characters,
but in the end it makes the show a lot more enjoyable if you really
care what's going on, instead of just watching for the humor
(as I often find myself doing).
The plots tend to run by more quickly than I'd like since
the OVA is actually 2 OVAs, the first 6 episodes being
a stand alone, and the latter 7 being add-ons to that.
The end result is that the first 6 try to cover a lot of material
in a very short time, while keeping a few small
side stories going in the mean time. The later episodes
(especially immediately after episode 6) spend a lot more
time doing nothing in particular, and just watching the cast
enjoy some free time. The time that's not spent fighting off
intergalactic menace are actually the high points of the series,
since the fight scenes aren't all that well done anyway (although
there is some good drama to be had in some points).
In the end, it's a series that you can either really get into, or just not enjoy at all. I'd like to think that more people would take the former, but knowing me I'm probably wrong. In any case, I'm a fan and I know there are others, so I stand by the good review!
