Summary:

In world of magicians, swordsmen, dragons, and several other stereotypes, one loudmouth redheaded magician rises to make a name for herself, Lina Inverse. Lina is seen as a powerful magician who is merciless to her enemies and plagues her land. The Truth: she's a young girl that just has a bad reputation and a quick temper to boot. As she travels the world in search of more gold for herself, or spells to make her more powerful, a swordsman joins her along with several other oddball companions.

Explanation for Rating:

Adoogen:
Oh man, I hope nobody rips my head off for giving Slayers only a 3.5 -I almost gave it a 3. Well, let me explain my reason, the series in my opinion is based around the character interaction and battles. The first one (characters) are enjoyable, sure they may just be stereotypical characters, but their interaction is priceless and nothing is better than watching Lina rant and rave at some of the situations they get into. The second (battles) I just don't like at all. The fact that she begins the series with one of the most powerful spells kinda takes the fun out it, yes I know she can't use it every battle, or else this series would be rated a 1. Nevertheless, I found the battles severely lacking and by season two I noticed I had to force myself to watch the episodes. But apparently a lot of people like it more than I do, so what do I know...

Apparently, ADV had to screw this up. Here's how animenfo.com explains it:

There are 3 OVAs in Slayers: The Book of Spells; Episode 1 - The Scarry Chimera Plan; Episode 2 - Jeffrey's Knighthood; and Episode 3 - Mirror, Mirror. However, ADV confusingly first released this OVA into 2 set of VHS (Slayers: Dragon Slave and Slayers: Explosion Array). Later they re-released this in one DVD called Slayers: The Book of Spells.
