Summary:

Maison Ikkoku is a run-down boarding house that is not much a "fixer-upper" as it is a "blower-upper". That is until the new manager of the building enters the scene. Kyoko Otonashi is a recently widowed women who has come with her dog Soichoro to watch over the place. One of the residents, a college "ronin" trying to make it into a university named Yusaku Godai, falls in love with her. The other residents of Maison Ikkoku include a mysterious man who's hobby include voyourism (Peeping Tom), a woman whose favorite past time is drinking and meddling in other people's business, and a young "open" lady who works at a bar and doesn't mind letting it all out. The cast is truly refreshing, the interaction between all of the tenants is lively and entertaining. The series will keep you on your toes with anything from light-hearted comedy to some pretty depressing situations. Truly a must watch/read.

Explanation for Rating:

Adoogen:
Phew, I just read all the manga and it was excellent! When I was finished I was happy for the rest of the night and next entire day just having all the comical scenes floating around in my head. The characters are truly amazing and are very original. Sometimes I just laughed and laughed and laughed, but the series did definitely have some serious scenes where you sympathized for the characters. I always fear nearing the end of Romance Comedies because I think the ability to tie up their endings is really difficult. Maison Ikkoku handled the situation pretty well, and I was only displeased with the way they "wrapped up" two of the characters. If you like Ranma, or Love Hina, or Video Girl Ai, watch or read this series so you can see their predesecor.

Oh yea, this series is pretty old alright, the series was made around 1986 by my favorite manga artist, Rumiko Takahashi(-sama). She's still drawing/writing for one of her more popular series, Inuyasha. But I like Maison Ikkoku more than I like Inuyasha (don't flame me!!!)
