Summary:

The series starts off following a girl dreaming. When she wakes up, she finds herself in water and she scratches through the wall to find out she is in a cocoon. When she wakes up, she is surrounded by people with halos and wings. The girl has been reborn; she cannot remember any of her previous life, and she soon becomes like the other people who call themselves Haibane. The girl, given the name Rakka, searches for answers in this new world.

Adoogen:
As I write this I haven't decided yet how I want to rate this series. The series has many good points, and brings up many good questions, like "can these Haibane ever really find out their past?", "what makes them special?", or "what's on the other side of the wall?". Well, a lot of these kind of questions never get answered... at all. To me, they seemed very critical to the series, and the main character Rakka would ask throughout the series, but never receives a good answer.

The animation is good, but I think around episode 4, there are times where the animation just gets really.... slugish, there's definitely a drop at some point, but it picks back up in the next scene. There are about five important female Haibane in the house they live in, yet, most of them do nothing more but hang out in the background. The relationship that develops between Rakka and another Haibane Reki is very interesting, and probably one of the best part of the series. I once found a quote by the creator of Haibane Renmei that said he/she wanted this series to just be a long, slow journey. Well, for being a long, slow journey I think the series did a good job.

I think a series like this relies heavily on how the ending turns out, and I think that's what I really liked about the series- but then again, a lot of important questions were never answered. I found this quote in a summary of Haibane Renmei:
"Why did Rekka become a Haibane? Who were the Haibane? As Rekka continues her life in the peaceful town of Guri, the mystery behind her new friends begin to be revealed."
Be warned, this is a lie, I don't think any of these questions are answered in the end. Even after I keep making the point about the questions, it is still a really good series. The characters are lovable, the plot is really good, and the music is up to par as well.
