| Summary:
Universal Century 0079, mankind has begun it's move into space with a series of giant colonies
called Sides. When Side 6 declares itself the Principality of Zeon and begins a brutal war for
independence on the Earth. With numbers against them the Zeon resort to extreme tactics and
an advanced new weapon called a Mobile Suit.
Three months later, a secret weapons research lab on Side 7 is attacked by the Zeon. Civilians
there are forced to flee aboard the Earth's latest battleship, the White Base, carrying it's most advanced weapons.
Plunged into the heart of battle by circumstances, Amuro Rei takes up the controls of Earth's advanced
mobile suit, Gundam, and defends White Base as it makes its way across the battlefield to safety.

| Explanation for Rating:
Spirit of Discord:
It's also one of the few mecha shows that has more to it than good guys fighting against bad guys.
The Zeon, while they resort to nuclear strikes, assassinations, and colony drops throughout the show,
are, after all, fighting for the independence against a superior foe. Even at their worst they're never
totally vilified (although they also aren't made morally equal to the Earth forces
like in 08th MS Team or Char's Counterattack).
The only thing that you can hold against Gundam, albeit unjustly, is it's animation. But since it's over
30 years old, I'll excuse that. If you're watching this show for pretty images and fancy action scenes you're watching
it for the wrong reasons anyway.
Subtle plot twists, unexpected tragedy, and deep characters keep the show interesting from start to finish.
Sure, the original Gundam more than shows it's age, but it definitely deserves it's status as a classic.
