* The kanji for "death" is also read shi, so 4 is considered unlucky. 4 is also read as yon. 7 is also read nana. Pronounce kyuu and juu as the letter Q and the word Jew. One is sometimes heard as ich ("eech")
Numbers are arranged similarly to English. First put the numbers together as you'd write them. Let's use 4,381 as an example:
- Break up the number into each place (4000, 300, 80 and 1 = 4381)
- For each number, name the number, then the place.
- 4000 would be yon-sen (four thousand)
- 300 would be san-hyaku (three hundred)
- 80 would be hachi-juu (eight ten)
- 1 would be ichi (one)
Together, the number 4,381 would be spoken as yon-sen san-hyaku hachi-juu ichi.
